COCONUT GROVE ARTS FESTIVAL
There are plenty of arts festivals all around the state and the country, but few can match the quality, excitement, energy and passion of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival, which has for good reason become the nation’s top outdoor festival.
This festival, which stretches over three days on Presidents Day weekend and is the highlight of South Florida’s cultural calendar every year, is a celebration of fine art from every genre, with great cuisine, entertainment, and everything else to make up a phenomenal three day event.
The Coconut Grove Arts Festival made its start in October of 1963 when Coconut Grove Playhouse public relations director, Charles Cinnamon, wanted to promote the opening of the French musical Irma La Douce that was to be performed at the Playhouse. He, unknowingly of its success, organized what he called the Left Bank Art Show.
Cinnamon, along with some local artist such as Tony Scornavacca, transformed the streets around the Playhouse into a Parisian theme creating a clothesline art show. One of the attractions was a French poodle show that took place outside the theater doors.
The show was so successful that shortly thereafter the Coconut Grove Association was formed and the annual Coconut Grove Art Festival was born.
What started as a Parisian clothesline art show at the corner of the Playhouse has turned into a mile long display of hundreds of artist’s work from around the globe. But it’s more than just logistics when it comes to the Coconut Grove Arts Festival; not only is it located in one of the most beautiful areas of Miami proper, but you also get a ton out of your experience when it comes to walking the mile, seeing the exhibits and artists’ works, and enjoying the live entertainment and fun dining experiences throughout the event itself.
COCONUT GROVE PUMPKIN PATCH FESTIVAL
The Pumpkin Patch Festival is a celebration of autumn occurring every October.
There is fun for the whole family including an impressive pumpkin patch with 5,000 pumpkins to choose from! Also included in the festival is a variety of fun activities including unlimited kiddie carnival rides for the children, hay and cornstalk maze, a scarecrow village where you get to dress-your-own scarecrow, hay rides, and on-going entertainment and activities on stage!
There is also fun for the adults with the Pumpkin Food Court where they can find savory and sweet pumpkin delights as well as delicious fair food favorites! They can also enjoy the Pumpkin Beer Garden too!
Coconut Groves Peacock Park hosts annually Grovetoberfest, a celebration of “BEER” featuring over 300 craft beers from across our country and the world.
This one day event occurs every October. The event includes entertaining demonstrations from the “Kitchen Lab” where award-winning chefs speak on food and beer.
It also gets the community involved with a brewmasters brew-battle where local brewmasters-to-be get the chance to show off their skills and compete for a prize.
Live musical entertainment is played throughout the day to set the festive mood.
COCONUT GROVE SEAFOOD FESTIVAL
The Coconut Grove Seafood Festival is a one day event occurring the day after Octoberfest. This event celebrates seafood and waterfront living.
Visitors can savor their flavor on the freshest, tastiest delicatessens of the sea prepared in a variety of dishes from around the world such as the Caribbean’s with its Bahamian cracked conch and Jamaican Jerk grilled fish, Latin America with its paella and Peruvian ceviche, Asia with its sushi and sashimi, and here in the United States with its Cajun gumbo, jambalaya and crawfish, North Eastern traditional chowders, lobster rolls and clam boils, and lastly Florida with our world-famous stone crab, lobster and fresh fish.
There is also a seafood farmers market, “Grove Wharf”, where there is a wide selection of shrimp, oysters, crawfish, lobster, clams and fresh fish and always in time for stone crab season. There are experts on hand to answer questions or help in seafood selections.
Live entertainment sets the mood from musicians playing calypso, steel drum, reggae and Island Escapism throughout the day.
Also included in the festival are several vendors of nautical art, jewelry and décor.
As in all events that Coconut Grove host, there is always a family fun zone which includes fun activities with balloons, magicians, face painters, several rides, attractions and more.
“Fete de la Musique”
Fete de la Musique is a celebration of the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year.
This event originally started in Paris, France in 1982 and is now celebrated in over 100 countries and more than 450 cities including the Grove, which happens every June. It is a night of live musical entertainment by amateur and professional musicians performing a variety of musical styles such as jazz, blues, Latin, R&B, funk, rock, and more all reflective of South Florida’s mix musical culture.
Performances can be found along the streets, on sidewalks, in courtyards, restaurants, cafes, clubs and public areas. You are sure to find a beat that moves you.
COCONUT GROVE BED RACES
The Great Grove Bed Races is held every November and is an event to raise money for various non-profit organizations.
Local businesses participate in this event creating decorative beds on wheels and racing them down Bayshore Drive all for charity.
The event is filled with live music, hip hop dancing, and a parade of zany themed beds. The crowd always gets involved by voting for their favorite bed of the day. The winner gets the top race prize “Crowd Favorite” and helps their charity change lives.
Celebrities can also be seen participating in the event such as award winning recording artist and HGTV star Vanilla Ice, rapper Flo Rida, Pit Bull, and Helio Castroneves. They help in the judging, wrapping to the crowd and making bed racing in Miami unique.
KING MANGO STRUT PARADE
The King Mango Strut Parade is held on the last Sunday of the year and celebrates “Putting the NUT in CocoNUT Grove”.
This parade was started by Glenn Terry and Bill Dobson in 1982 after their group, the Merry Mango Marching Band, was denied entry into the King Orange Jamboree Parade.
This parade humorously focuses on local, national and global events from the previous year and creates mocking costumes along with marching bands and floats parading along the streets of the Grove. It is by far the wackiest parade in the Universe that has brought The Marching Freds, The Synchronize Briefcase Brigade, The Booger King, The Million Chad March, The League of Dead Voters, Cuban Eye for the Gringo Guy, Idu Grab Prison, Weapons of Mass Distraction, Osama Piñata and The Hare Krishnas.
This event is full of bold, creative and silly people with lots of opportunity to poke fun of anything and everything.
