Key West, Florida
Key West, or the Conch Republic as the locals call it, might only be a few hours from the mainland, but it is truly a world away. The streets are lined with palm trees and there are always people out and about, taking in the unique vibes that the city gives off. Every local you meet will be different and will have a different background, but most have developed that laid back attitude that comes with living in such a diverse and tropical environment.
The island city has a rich history that dates back all the way back to the 1520s when the explorer Ponce de León visited and claimed the land for Spain. Before he came, the Calusa people occupied the area. In 1763, Great Britain took over all of Florida and sent the remaining Spaniards and Calusa people to Cuba. Spain reclaimed Florida 20 years after that, but there was no resettlement of the island. It earned the name the “Gibraltar of the West” because of its perfect trade position on the Straits of Florida. Piracy became rampant in the late 1700s and early 1800s, so the US Navy sent an anti-pirate squadron to dictate the island and prevent any further pirating. John Simonton and three of his friends (who were all named John) ended up developing the island in the early 1800s. This is when Key West started to look like it does today. It became less of a military city and started to gain its own personality. During the Civil War, the island was under Union control, despite being in the Confederate state of Florida. By the late 1800s, the people of Key West were producing a lot of salt. Other industries that started to thrive were the wrecking industry, salvaging industry, and turtling industry. By 1889, Key West was Florida’s largest and wealthiest city. When the Navy pulled out of the island in the early 1970s, the city finally started to become what it is today: a haven for the bold and different. Many famous people have called the city home, including Ernest Hemingway, Jimmy Buffet, Shel Silverstein, Truman Capote, Calvin Klein, Judy Blume, and Kenny Chesney, to name a few.
