Big Pine Key Blue Hole

Big Pine Key Blue Hole is a hidden attraction and a very popular stop for tourists. It was created during the construction of the Overseas Railroad. Henry Flagler needed a place to dig out rocks for his road fills. The Blue Hole was created when the rock quarry eventually flooded with rain. Now, it is a sanctuary for many different kinds of animals. Two gators live in the waters, so be careful when walking on the edge of the hole! You can also find 27 different kinds of birds, iguanas, snakes, lizards, frogs, and some fish that ended up in the hole after the 2005 hurricane season. You can also find plenty of Key Deer hanging out. It’s the perfect place to take photos and experience the natural life of the Florida Keys in a uniquely created environment.
