Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

Step back in time to the Gilded Age at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, one of Miami’s treasured historical landmarks found along the shores of Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove. Vizcaya was the winter home of entrepreneur and businessman James Deering who built this incredible Mediterranean-style mansion between 1914 and 1922. He hired the assistance of architect Francis Burral Hoffman and landscape artist Diego Suarez to create the astonishing eighteenth-century Italian villa-inspired estate and gardens. Vizcaya’s interiors were designed around objects acquired from Deering’s travels to Italy and reflect the Rococo and Neoclassical design. Equally impressive are the 10 acres of formal European-inspired gardens designed to create intimate spaces such as the Secret Garden, the Theater Garden, the Maze Garden, and the Fountain Garden. Adorning Vizcaya’s landscape are architectural structures, extravagant fountains, and sculptures both antique and commissioned. Deering also preserved the mangrove shoreline and rockland hammocks (native forest) that surrounded the main gardens. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens were designated as a National Historic Landmark by the U.S National Park Service and is open to the public Wednesday – Monday. Locals and visitors can enjoy any one of the numerous events Vizcaya hosts throughout the year. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a slice of Europe without leaving Miami.

The Barnacle
The Barnacle

The Barnacle Historic State Park is a timeless treasure well preserved in the heart of Coconut Grove. Discover a glimpse of a quieter time in Florida more than a century ago as you visit this historic home built in 1891 on the shore of Biscayne Bay. The Barnacle is the former home of Ralph Middleton Munroe, Coconut Groves’ earliest pioneer and prominent resident. One of the oldest houses in Miami-Dade, Munroe’s knowledge in ship building and Caribbean architecture helped him design and build a home that has withstood the test of time. A unique feature of the home is its octagonal center with a cupola that served as a ventilation system for the home. Displayed in the home are two replicas of his sailing vessels along with other everyday items used by Munroe. The Barnacle rests among Florida’s natural setting surrounded by towering palms and backed by tropical hardwood hammocks, reflective of Old Florida. The Barnacle opened to the public in 1973 and was officially designated as a state park in 1980. Being a favorite amongst locals, the Barnacle hosts a variety of fun events, concerts, and picnics throughout the year.
