Key West Bars and Taverns
If you have ever been to Key West, or specifically Duval Street, then you know that the city is full of fun and has a great nightlife. The many bars and taverns that pepper the historic roads all have their own unique take on island fun. When you walk into each, you’ll be sure to find a lively atmosphere, no matter the time of day.
Sloppy Joe’s is one of Key West’s most famous bars. It officially opened on December 5, 1933, which was the very same day Prohibition was repealed. Before then, the bar was a “speakeasy” that would illegally supply booze to many locals, including Ernest Hemingway. Early on, it was known as the Blind Pig and then the Silver Slipper. Hemingway encouraged the owner, Joe Russell, to change the name to Sloppy Joe’s. The name was inspired by the fact that the floors were always covered with melted ice and patrons considered it “sloppy.” Hemingway and his buddies became regular customers and started the legend that we speak of today. Now-a-days, the bar is open 365 days a year. There are always people dancing to live music that ranges from bluegrass to good old rock and roll. Every year, the bar also holds a “Papa Look-Alike Contest.” This is a part of a weeklong celebration focusing on Hemingway and his accomplishments. People from all over come every year to Sloppy Joe’s donning their white beards and rosy faces for this celebration. It is a part of Key West that cannot be missed.

The Schooner Wharf Bar
This bar is a local favorite and one of Key West’s most decorated bars. It actually started off on a ship, the Schooner Diamante, before moving to the shore. It is constantly voted the best local bar in the city. The bar provides locals and tourists alike with great food, drinks, and entertainment. Their menu includes all kinds of seafood, as well as burgers, steak sandwiches, and chicken wings. Many special events are held here, including the Lighted Boat Parade, the Minimal Regatta, Chili Cook-off, BBQ Cook-off, and more. Be sure to stop by the Schooner Wharf Bar on your next bar crawl, or to grab some tasty grub with the family.

Green Parrot Bar
The Green Parrot Bar started off as a grocery store. After the Great Depression, it was bought out and became the Brown Derby Bar. This bar was well known for housing sailors that were stationed at the base a block away. In the 1970s, the bar was renamed the Green Parrot Bar. This is when more and more interesting people started calling Key West home, so the bar started to fill with less sailors and more of the eccentric folk. Today, the Green Parrot is one of the main stops people make when visiting the Conch Republic, so make it one of your spots if you decide to visit or become a local yourself.
